What is ALTCOIN?

An Altcoins is new digital cryptocurrency similar to Bitcoin. Aside from Bitcoin, there are hundreds of other digital currencies out there. These are known as “altcoins” or alternatives to Bitcoin for example , ether , ripple, z cash and many more.
“ALTCOIN” is a combination of two words : “alt” and “coin”; alt signifying “alternative” and coin signifying “cryptocurrency”. Thus together they imply a category of cryptocurrency that is alternative to the digital currency Bitcoin. After the success story of Bitcoin, many other peer- to- peer digital currencies have emerged in an attempt to imitate that success. While Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency, and remains the best known, it is now only one of hundreds of cryptocurrencies, which all seek to improve upon Bitcoin in various ways.
Most popular altcoins use the same fundamental building blocks as Bitcoin. This approach is relatively easy to carry out because Bitcoin is a free, open source platform. When an altcoins forks at the blockchain level, an alternate system of consensus rules must be used and coin will have an entirely different distributed ledger. Some alt coins have different monetary policy rules built into the currency to encourage different uses and treatment.
Current leading examples of Altcoin include Litecoin, Dogecoin, Ethereum and Ripple. Litecoin is seen as the closet competitor to Bitcoin.
However, there are also many altcoins that don’t do interesting at all. The vast majority of altcoins simply tweak some parameters that don’t matter much, or offer something that may sound useful but isn’t. if for example, an Altcoin has a greater total amount of coins, it just means each individual coin is worth less. If an Altcoin finds blocks faster, it only means that a transaction requires more confirmations for a similar level of security.
Altcoins are typically riskier than bitcoin. Their exchange rates are often more volatile, and over the years virtually no altcoins have maintained their value against bitcoin; most have come and gone. On top of that, many altcoins can be considered outright scams, mainly created on enrich its inventors.
While some altcoins out there can and do perform useful tasks and may have a future, many others are exclusively driven by speculation or worse .
